Want to grab more attention on Facebook? A new video profile picture – such as an agent walking through a listing or putting up a “sold” sign – will do the trick. It’s among the changes Facebook announced this week that will soon be available worldwide.
Facebook soon will allow users to upload a seven-second video to replace the static profile picture that currently tops their page. The short videos will loop as visitors look at profiles, but any audio will play only in full-view mode if someone taps on it.
Among Facebook’s new product announcements:
Customizable space: Facebook is adding customizable space at the top of each profile so that the owner can add a few descriptive sentences, or even add some emojis to express feelings. There will also be a one-line, 100 character “bio” field. This can include info about jobs, education and more for the public to view. Users can also select five featured photos to showcase at the top of their profile.
Temporary profile pictures: Users can soon change their profile picture for a specific period of time. After the time passes, it will revert to the previous profile picture. Facebook says that this will allow users to show support for a cause or take part in Throwback Thursday without returning to Facebook later and re-set their standard profile picture.
Design changes: In Facebook’s mobile app, profile pictures are now larger and centered. Also, when visiting the profiles of friends, users will be able to more easily see their mutual friends, which will now display at the top.
We’re continually looking for ways to make profiles the best place for people to curate their online identities and connect with others,” wrote Aigerim Shorman and Tony Hsiesh in a news posting on Facebook about the enhancements.
Facebook is currently testing out these new features to a small number of iPhone users in California and the United Kingdom. (Open up your Facebook app on a mobile device and tap on the “More” button to see if you are among those with access to the new features.) Facebook has not yet set a date of when all users will be able to access the new features.
